Retirement Planning
A child born in 1900 had an average life expectancy of 47 years. For
a child born in 2006, that life expectancy increased to 78 years. For
most of the 20th century, retirement planning revolved around the idea
that a person would work full time until a certain age, after which they
would stop working and spend a relatively few quiet years until they
passed away.
Today, that situation has changed. Life spans have increased, and
those few years that a person might have spent in retirement have now
expanded--often dramatically. The traditional view of retirement is no
longer accurate. Some people choose to retire early, others choose to
continue working well into their post-traditional-retirement years.
Also, retirement is now frequently defined by an active lifestyle
including travel, sports and hobbies.
